Google on Tuesday released the open-source code which powers its Android mobile operating system and invited outside programmers to tinker with the software to develop their own features..
Android is not a single piece of hardware; it’s a complete, end-to-end software platform that can be adapted to work on any number of hardware configurations. Everything is there, from the bootloader all the way up to the applications. And with an Android device already on the market, it has proven that it has what it takes to truly compete in the mobile arena.
“Today is a big day for Android, the Open Handset Alliance, and the open-source community,” wrote Dave Bort, a Google software engineer, on source.android.com, the site where the code is available for downloading.
The expected release of the Android open-source code came on the eve of the arrival in stores of the Android-based T-Mobile G1 phone, Internet search king Google’s challenge to the hot-selling Apple iPhone.
The Mountain View, California-based company unveiled its long-awaited smart phone last month, the first of what is expected to be a generation of devices built on the Android operating platform.
The phones, which cost 179 dollars, 20 dollars cheaper than the iPhone 3G, go on sale in the United States on Wednesday, in Britain in early November and in other European countries served by telecom carrier T-Mobile in early 2009.
The G1 offers many of the features of the iPhone and Research in Motion’s popular BlackBerry including a touch screen similar to that of the iPhone, a trackball for navigation, high-speed Internet browsing, Wi-Fi, email, instant messaging and SMS texting.
Google hopes to establish Android as the standard operating system for mobile phones and to improve the quality of web-browsing for handset users. This would drive traffic to the company’s websites.
Google has already held the first of what is to be an annual “Android Developers Challenge” and given away five million dollars in prize money for innovative software tailored to the platform.
The Android-enabled “G Phone” can incorporate applications from any number of developers while the iPhone, for example, runs on Apple software.
But Google software faces fierce competition from the world’s biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia, and its Symbian system.
US software giant Microsoft also has a Windows system for mobiles and a separate consortium is working on an open-source Linux solution.
Google announced the Open Handset Alliance in November of last year to develop Android. It includes China Mobile, HTC, Intel, Motorola, Qualcomm, T-Mobile, Telefonica, LG and eBay.

India’s first unmanned lunar mission Chandrayaan I (Meaning LunarCraft) is scheduled to be launched on 22 October 2008 at 00:50 UTC by India’s own Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-XL from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota.
After this Launch India enters into the elite club that has sent missions to the moon.
Other members of the club are the US, former Soviet Union, European Space Agency, China and Japan. The US returns to lunar exploration aboard Chandrayaan-1, which is carrying two NASA instruments in its payload.
The 44.4-metre-tall 316-tonne rocket, Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV C11), had a copybook launch at 0620 hrs (IST) and completed its mission by placing the lunar orbiter Chandrayaan-1 into its scheduled orbit around the earth within 18 minutes, just as planned.
Indian Space Research Organisation’s (ISRO) warhorse rocket PSLV C-11 put Chandrayaan-I into the earth orbit at around 6:30 a.m. today.
“I congratulate all the scientists associated with this mission for the successful completion of the first step,” the Prime Minister of India said.
With the successful launch of this remote sensing satellite weighing 1304 kg India will become the sixth country to send any type of lunar mission in space, Chandrayaan-1 will take approximately eight days to complete its nearly 3,86,000 km long journey for reaching into its final orbit 100 km from the moon, Chandrayaan-1 will carry a high resolution remote sensing equipment for visible, near infrared, soft and hard X-ray frequencies. Over a two-year period, it is intended to survey the lunar surface to produce a complete map of its chemical characteristics and 3-dimensional topography. The polar regions are of special interest, as they might contain water ice.

After nine years of hard work, the countdown for Chandrayaan-1 – India’s first unmanned moon mission – has begun at the Sriharikota space station. The launch is scheduled for early Wednesday morning.
Chandrayaan-1 will orbit the moon for about two years, mapping the topography and mineral content of the lunar soil. It will take off from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, about 80 km from Chennai, and off the Bay of Bengal.
The Chandrayaan-1 launch would be around 0620 hrs IST on October 22, weather conditions permitting.
Ninety-nine per cent of the integration and testing is complete and the countdown has begun for India’s historic tryst with the moon. The success of Chandrayaan-1 will catapult India among the top five space exploring countries of the world.
The main objective of Chandrayaan-I is investigation of the distribution of various minerals and chemical elements and high-resolution three-dimensional mapping of the entire lunar surface. ISRO’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) will launch Chandrayaan-I into a 240 km x 24,000 km earth orbit. Subsequently, the spacecraft’s own propulsion system will be used to place it in a 100-km polar orbit around the moon.
M Annadurai, project chief, Chandrayaan, had said earlier: “This will be the first step towards our manned mission to the moon.”
The remote sensing satellite will weigh 1,304 kg (590 kg initial orbit mass and 504 kg dry mass) and carry high-resolution remote sensing equipment for visible, near infrared, soft and hard X-ray frequencies. Over its expected lifetime of two years, it will survey the lunar surface and produce a map of its chemical characteristics and three-dimensional topography.
They estimate the cost to be INR 3.8 billion (US$ 83 million) , expected to cost Rs 386 crore,it will study the surface of the moon using light. Many other countries are also looking at the possibility of mining the abundant mineral resources on the moon.
The mission includes five ISRO payloads and six payloads from other international space agencies such as NASA and ESA, and the Bulgarian Aerospace Agency .
Hackers,
a group that consists of skilled computer enthusiasts. A black hat is a
person who compromises the security of a computer system without
permission from an authorized party, typically with malicious intent.
The term white hat is used for a person who is ethically opposed to the
abuse of computer systems, but is frequently no less skilled. The term
cracker was coined by Richard Stallman to provide an alternative to
using the existing word hacker for this meaning. The somewhat similar
activity of defeating copy prevention devices in software which may or
may not be legal in a country's laws is actually software cracking....Anyway, Firefox has come with new improved features in its new beta version. Some of improved features are

its push towards becoming a global IT power. A cluster platform at Pune’s Computational Research Laboratories, a Tata subsidiary, has been ranked fourth in the widely anticipated Top 500 list released at an international conference on high performance computing in Reno, Nevada. The Indian supercomputer has been adjudged the fastest in Asia.It is the first time India has figured in the global Top 100, let alone Top 10. The list, usually dominated by the US, is also notable this time because it has five new entrants in the Top 10, with supercomputers in Germany and Sweden up there with the one in India.
The No. 1 position has again been claimed by the BlueGene/L System, a joint development of IBM and the US department of energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration and installed at DOE’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California.
Although BlueGene/L has occupied the No. 1 position since November 2004, the current system is much faster at 478.2 teraflops compared with 280.6 teraflops six months ago before its upgrade. At No. 2 is a Blue-Gene/P system installed in Germany at the Forschungszentrum Juelich; it achieved a speed of 167.3 teraflops. The No. 3 system at the New Mexico Computing Applications Center in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, posted a speed of 126.9 teraflops.
The Tata supercomputer, named EKA after the Sanskrit term for one, is a Hewlett-Packard Cluster Platform 3000 BL460c system. CRL has integrated this system with its own innovative routing technology and achieved a speed of 117.9 teraflop. A teraflop is a trillion calculations per second.EKA has been built at Tata's Pune facility. It uses nearly 1,800 computing nodes and has a peak performance of 170 trillion floating-point operations per second.Supercomputer had been built with HP servers using Intel chips with 14,240 processor cores. The system went operational last month and achieved a speed of 117.9 teraflops.
The second ranked supercomputer in India, rated 58th in the Top 500 list is at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Others are ranked 152, 158, 179, 336, 339, 340 and 371. Horst Simon, associate laboratory director, computing sciences, at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, and one of the Top 500 list authors, told that it was exciting to see India’s entrance into the Top 10 and because the country has ‘‘huge potential’’ as a supercomputing nation.
US is clearly the leading consumer of high power computing systems with 284 of the 500 systems, Europe follows with 149 systems and Asia has 58. In Asia, Japan leads with 20 systems, Taiwan has 11, China 10 and India 9.

ACER ASPIRE
Among the two, the fastest processor belongs to the Acer Aspire. It features a 1.8 GHz AMD Turion 64 ML-34 processor. To give you an idea, its very close in performance to the Pentium M 760, which is a 2 GHz processor with a FSB of 533 MHz whereas the second fastest processor is on the Dell Inspiron 1300, which is clocked at 1.7 GHz with an FSB of 400 Mhz.
The 5004 has a 15.4" screen with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, which makes it the largest for laptops in this category, but also keep in mind that it makes this laptop larger to carry as compared to its 14" counterparts.
If you are using Windows XP as your operating system, we recommend nothing short of 512MB of RAM. This is the only place where Acer, which leads in most of the other specifications falls short, with only 256MB of RAM. We'd recommend you upgrade the RAM if you wish to do anything beyond office documents.
It's the only laptop among these price range which features an 8x dual layer dvd writer. With respect to battery life it again leads the pack with an 8 cell battery. It carries a 60GB P-ATA (parallel ATA) hard drive which is the same as Dell's.
Internet connectivity is pretty much standard with a 56k Modem, 10/100 LAN and 802.11 b/g wireless LAN. Additonal features include integrated Bluetooth and 5-in-1 card reader and it comes bundled with a nylon case.
Price : Rs 39,900 /= (Price may differ)
